Claude – fun on the Wii Fit

I’ve now had my Wii Fit for a week and just love it. As Sandy said earlier, I find it serious fun.
There are four categories of exercises: yoga, strength training, balance games and aerobics.
I must say I most enjoy the last two categories.
Yoga – I’ve never been much of a yoga person, probably because I never met the right instructor and mostly ended up hurting my back. So I am wary of this category on the Wii Fit.
Strength training I just find too demanding at the moment, but I might very well get to it later on, I only practise on a couple of games in that category
The balance games are fun and effective. I am hopeless at some but find them so much fun that I keep trying, and am slowly progressing.
I also quite enjoy the aerobic exercises, and surprisingly, my two favourites are rhythm boxing and step aerobics. They are an incredible challenge to my lack of coordination. The one I am really hopeless at is the Hula hoop! But I am faithfully trying.

There are a couple of things that I don’t like, for example the “voice” impersonating the Balance Board just tends to get on my nerves, and the fact that one has to press the start button umpteen times to start a game just slows the machine down and as you may have gathered, I am not a patient woman. ;)

Another structural feature that I don’t like is the obsession on weight. As I have been dieting all my life, like a lot of women, I find that just mentioning the word ‘diet’ now, makes me go crazy.
When I started my exercise programme, back in February, coached by a medical team, I WAS given dietary advice, but the programme relies on exercise and reasonable dietary advice more than weight loss. As my doctor said then, what I am trying to do is get healthier, not lose weight. Weight loss might come as a side-effect but not as a main feature. And this suits me fine!

Now, the Wii Fit weighs you and makes you set a weight goal, that you will reach in a time lapse chosen by you. This is one feature that I don’t like at all.

But on the whole, and if one doesn’t forget that it should be an addition to walking and biking or whatever else your cup of tea is, the Wii Fit is well worth it.

  • Claude, thanks for this post. I’ve been waiting to hear about your reaction to Wii Fit, to use in my seminar in two week’s time. Instinctively, I think that I would only be interested in the dance and balance routines myself. Please keep us informed about how the Wii Fit works out in the long run. Particularly, as an alternative to outdoor exercise, when the stormy fall weather arrives.

  • Wow!!! This sounds interesting! Winter is always a problem for exercise here in Ohio and this might help.

I’m with you Claude — the emphasis on weight is a pain. Early in our marriage my now ex-husband became ill and the doctor told him to lose 70 pounds. Via some creativity on my part and willpower on his part he did. And he felt terrible — weal and sickly. He gained back 15 pounds and felt great! What that tells me is that your so-called ideal weight has nothing to do with a chart in a doctor’s office; it has to do with what is right for each individual.
